Science and Technology - Definition by Real Life Examples

How someone could define what is Science and Technology?

Science is search for the profound knowledge. Scientists investigate the world around us. They observe how things work and develop ideas about ways to make them work better. Sometimes they try to test an idea to explain how something works. Scientists perform experiments to find out how things work. The knowledge that they discover is useful for many things. It can help to build new machines. It can help scientists to develop new medicines or cure a disease. Technology is the use of scientific knowledge to create new things.

Then what is an Inventor?

An inventor is a person who creates a new idea or device to perform a task. An invention is the new technology created. An inventor with a new idea or design for an invention may decide to have the idea protected. The idea gets protection from the law in a paper called a patent. A patent prevents other people from making, using, or selling the new idea without permission from the inventor. Some inventions are simply a better way of doing or building something. They may improve an existing technology. Other inventions are much more complicated.

Today's technology has been in the process of development for thousands of years. New inventions are constantly changing how people work and play. They change how people think and live. The future constantly brings us even more changes. This will happen as we continue to learn about the world.

Do we depend on science and technology?

What did you do today? Did you talk on the telephone? Did you ride in a car or on a bus? Did you use a computer or turn on a light? If you did any of these things, you used technology.

Almost everybody uses some form of technology at work, home, or school. Computer programmers use computer technology to write a computer program. People may write letters using a computer program called a word processor. Many people work in the entertainment industry. Camera operators use television and motion-picture cameras. They use them to make TV shows and movies. Disc jockeys, or DJs, play records and CDs on the radio.

Scientists use all sorts of technology to study the Earth and the Universe. Businesses often have telephones, fax machines, and computers. Graphic designers use desktop publishing programs to create books and magazines. Doctors frequently use medical technology. They use it to treat injuries, illnesses, and diseases such as cancer. Pilots fly airplanes and helicopters. Who knows what jobs will be created by new technologies in the future!

Science and Technology - Making Cosmetics Safer

Contrary to popular speculation, the use of cosmetics is not a modern phenomenon. Although we cannot state for a fact when our human obsession with beauty started the fact remains that it has been around for a very long time. That said; the first archaeological evidence of cosmetic usage was actually recorded in Egypt way back around 3500 BC. This proves that cosmetics have been around for thousands of years. It is said that the ancient Egyptian women actually used Kohl to darken their eyelids.

With more people caring about their appearance today, it is no wonder that perfumes, cosmetics and skin care products constitute a multimillion dollar industry that confuses customers with a wide choice of products to choose from. Unlike in the past where the absence of regulation concerning the production of beauty products led to extreme side effects such as deformities and even death, today there are governing bodies which set the guidelines for the manufacture of cosmetic products. One governing regulation that these bodies have is that companies that manufacture or sell cosmetics are liable for any side effects that may arise as a result of use of that product.

In order to prevent any liability cases, cosmetic companies have dug deeper into science to save their businesses. With the help of technology they have been able to make cosmetics safer by adding special ingredients into their products to make it more skin friendly. Here are a few examples:

Emulsifiers- Simply put, emulsifiers are small droplets of oil that are dispersed in water or small droplets of water that are dispersed in oil. Either way, the droplets that are dispersed are meant to alter the surface tension of the water and oil phases thus preventing separation. The result is usually a homogenous product that not only produces an even skin texture but is also safer to use. The emulsifiers also act by reducing trans-epidermal water loss that sometimes causes itchiness. Allergic reactions to some oils in cosmetics have also been reduced by the use of emulsifiers.

Preservatives- The addition of preservatives to make up was solely meant to prevent the growth of microorganisms. Preservatives such as benzyl alcohol have been known to kill bacteria and fungi that degrade cosmetics which eventually harm the user. The removal of mercury based preservatives e.g. thimerosal has also been carried out after it was proven to be highly toxic to the nervous and immune system.

PH stabilizers - The introduction of PH stabilizers was meant to curb unintended side effects such as skin allergies which caused a rash where the product was applied. The work of these stabilizers is to prevent any excessive acidity or alkalinity for that matter. Their creation was based on the fact that most cosmetic ingredients were barely water soluble and hence special solvents had to be developed to bring such ingredients to solution when the need arose.

What is important to remember here is that while science is reducing the harmful effects of beauty products, it is definitely wise to keep in mind that chemical combinations have become very complex and that gaining a deeper understanding of the ingredients used will prove to be very helpful in the long run especially where your skin is concerned.

Science and Technology Degrees Offer Multi-Faceted Career Opportunities

Usually, when one thinks of a career in mathematics, they think of ivory tower recluses contemplating the nature of the universe through numbers. The truth is quite the opposite. One of the largest of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career paths is the actuary and by the very nature of their profession they are one of the most grounded of the fields. A love of numbers and a bachelor science degree can start one on this career path.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, actuaries deal with risk. They decide how likely things such as death, sickness, injury, disability, and loss of property are to occur, as well as the costs of these things. They also decide how much money it will take in order to get a certain amount of retirement income. They help design insurance policies, pension plans and try to make sure any risk is sound. Actuaries may need to explain their findings to company executives, government officials, the public and may even testify in court as experts

In other words, they are the backbone of the insurance industry. They can also work for consulting firms, where their expertise in risk assessment can be used in a number of other ways. If you look at TV shows such as Numb3rs, a lot of the science the stars use is actuarial.

Actuaries must have a strong background in both math and general business. To start in the field, one must have a Bachelor's degree in math, actuarial science, or statistics, although there are actuaries who have degrees in economics, finance, or accounting.

Most universities have actuarial science programs. It's usually a good idea to talk to a career counselor to learn what is actually in the curriculum. Even with a degree, graduates also have to take a certification exam before they earn a full position. Luckily, many insurers and similar firms will hire the graduate while they study for the actuarial exam online.

There is an incredible need for this profession. This is certainly reflected in the salary. According to the Bureau, the bottom end of an annual wage is nearly $50,000 a year. The average actuary wage ranges from $90,000 to $110,000, depending on which industry he or she is in, and where they are located. The top ten percent exceeds over $160,000 before going into upper management. These jobs almost always come with superlative benefits packages, including investment and retirement programs, extended vacations, continued education packages and, naturally, life and health insurance.

As actuarial science is considered a STEM field, it is open to more than the usual avenues for financial aid. Not only can a student get a standard Pell Grant, but also is open to an S-STEM grant from the National Science Foundation. Also, many professional organizations inside the finance and science communities have grant funds.

Science and Technology For a Better Future

One of the most often asked questions in the contemporary world is 'What is the meaning of science and technology?' Man is innovative in nature. The ability of man to create and change the shape of that which he has created is what sets him apart from other organisms. Science is the approach to study that emphasized the use of empirical evidence to come up with new ideas. As one of the branches of knowledge, it sets out to find out more on the nature of the physical world. Through practical analysis of phenomena, scientists have come up with solutions to many problems that have plagued mankind for many years.

The first step in scientific undertaking is coming up with a problem. Once a problem has been identified, there has to be dependent and independent variables that guide the researcher in formulating a hypothesis that will help him to come up with the most accurate results. A hypothesis is a tentative statement assumes that one of the two possible outcomes will happen. The researcher can choose to adopt any of the possible outcomes as his hypothesis. This is the foundation that led to the discovery of cures for many diseases that initially used to kill millions annually such as malaria.

The scientific approach to research is responsible for development of technology. Technology is the ability for man to make tasks easier to perform through a highly sets of scientific applications which build on interrelatedness of many basic principles. Machines are synonymously used with the concept of technology. Yet the contemporary use of the word presumes things like computers and mobile phones. It is true that technology these days must be viewed in terms of the changes brought into the existing communication systems through the computer. The electronics industry has grown a lot within a short span of time. Science has contributed largely to this since it is through continued research that new machines are being unveiled.

When trying to answer the question 'What is the meaning of science and technology?' we have to view science as the study of the natural world while technology has to be viewed as the study of how to manipulate the natural world in order to suit man. This relationship is best understood through Science and Technologies Studies (STS). Being a scientific discipline, this study highlights the relationship between these two areas of study and how they affect the cultural, scientific, political and social set-up of world's communities. The amount of information that is coming out of scientific enquiries is overwhelming. It is surprising how universities have succeeded in harmonizing the large body of research data that comes from research institutions fro around the world.

To differentiate between scientific enquiries from the artistic ones, there is need to look into the nature of truth. Science has no room for that which is taken to be true or false on the power of belief. This is the best way in which we can answer the question 'What is the meaning of science and technology?' There has to be a way of verifying the truth or falsity of any phenomenon. This is called the verification principle. There must be truth conditions which in practical terms are variables. If a statement cannot be proven to true or false, it is without sense and is not good for science and technology.
